Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate

Rev Harry Herbert, a Uniting Church minister, died on 6 December 2019. Harry was a great friend and colleague. He delighted in telling people that he and I fell into a ‘good cop, bad cop’ routine at advocacy meetings with government officials. He emphasised that he was the good cop. I would ask the difficult questions and he would soothe the waters.

Harry’s greatest achievement was the medically supervised injecting room at Kings Cross. More than 20 years later, it is credited with having saved thousands of lives and assisting many to seek treatment and rehabilitation, with no further overdoses.

Harry had asked that I read the Gospel at his funeral service. It was Matthew 25:31-46, The Last Judgment. That was Harry’s final statement. His widow, Meg, underlined the message. Harry had told her to remind the congregation that there are no exclusions: everyone is worthy of care.
