About Today Readings

1 Kings 17:1-6. Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth – Psalm 120(121):1-8. Matthew 5:1-12.

Are we prepared to be persecuted in pursuit of justice?

Can anything new be said about the Beatitudes, the subject of today’s reading? Perhaps only that the Gospel is connected to today’s Old Testament reading in that Elijah also preached a similar counter-cultural message in his own time. Does our culture praise the gentle or does it reward the successfully aggressive? Does our media genuinely seek to report justice or does it feed a communal thirst for revenge? Do we long for authorities to be merciful, or only when they are about to mete out punishment to us? Do we really try to act with purity of motive, purity of heart? Are we prepared to be persecuted in the pursuit of justice? That’s the thing about a truly great thinker such as Jesus: simple words cut deep, and they can be mined repeatedly, from generation to generation, making us look at ourselves again and again, forcing us on to moral progress.
