St John XXIII
Romans 1:1-7. The Lord has made known his salvation – Psalm 97(98):1-4. Luke 11:29-32.
The Gospel speaks to all times and all generations
I take some strange comfort in when I hear Jesus describe his contemporaries as a ‘wicked generation’. It’s so easy to idealise the past, to think that godlessness is somehow new, that we are the only generation to have lost our way. The present is a dangerous, war-torn country. It isn’t safe to walk the streets. It isn’t safe to turn on the radio. The past is a magical place, all wholesome and sepia-tinted.
Today’s Gospel, like all of scripture, speaks to all times and all generations. It is written for us today. How often do I wait for a ‘sign’? How often do I procrastinate until conditions are perfect before I do good? Help me, Jesus, to begin.Email this Print This Page
