Colossians 1:24-2:3. In God is my safety and my glory – Psalm 61(62):6-7, 9. Luke 6:6-11.
Opening our minds to a loving truth
Jesus maximised every opportunity to reach the hearts and minds of the Pharisees and teachers in order to open their minds to a larger and more loving truth. We see Jesus stretching their awareness of the Spirit at work through the fulfilment of the Law rather than its abolishment. God also takes our former ways of thinking and turns them into a new creation. Perhaps there is a bit of the Pharisaic logic in some people today, with prayers and piety constrained to weekend ritual of the Eucharist. Jesus asks the Pharisees to consider if they should save life or destroy it, and likewise he asks us to consider the boundaries we place around our faith. Do we honour and reverence those we encounter every day of the week – the sick, the lonely and the least?
