A surrender to the unknown

Just as Jesus describes the Spirit through the way that wind blows, much of the spiritual life remains a mystery to us. Why is it that we can experience dryness and darkness in our faith at the times when we feel we have been most committed, and are surprised by the sudden presence of God when we feel least deserving of it? The more we try to control it, to expect a pattern, the Spirit eludes and escapes us. Giving yourself over to this mystery means a surrender to the unknown, and faith that the Spirit will lead you to a place of newness and life.
