1 Samuel 1:1-8. To you, Lord, I will offer a sacrifice of praise – Ps 115(116):12-19. Mark 1:14-20.
Living water
Water imagery is scattered throughout the Bible – ‘When you pass through waters, I will be with you’ (Is 43:2), ‘But let justice roll on like a river’ (Amos 5:24), ‘You, God, are my God, . . .; I thirst for you’ (Ps 63:1); ‘the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life’ (Jn 4:10-15). As fishermen, Simon, Andrew, James and John would have seen the Sea of Galilee in various guises – calm and welcoming, offering a generous bounty, and at other times threatening and cruel, delivering little for the effort expended. It is fitting that these men who relied on water for life and livelihoods were then called to follow Jesus and preach of the ‘living water’.
