It is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword
Across our world, as the Israelites did, people experience daily oppression, in all of its forms. Oppression occurs not only in physically violent forms but also on the level of the mental, emotional and spiritual at the hands of the powerful. So too is the soul oppressed by these same dominant and powerful forces at play in the world. In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of overturning the accepted order of things. This overturning of oppressive structures calls for a radical change, both at the individual level, within our smaller circles, communities and society at large. We must have openness to recognise that what we might consider acceptable and comfortable may, too, be up for question.
