About Today Readings

Most Holy Name of Mary

1 Corinthians 11:17-26, 33. Proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes again – Psalm 39(40):7-10, 17. Luke 7:1-10.

If one hurries to be first, it is not the Lord’s Supper you are eating

The reading from 1 Corinthians is completely relevant to all of us today. We go to our liturgies with different intentions and wonder why they do not work sometimes. Paul tells the Corinthians severely that their intentions are wrong if they get there first and eat and drink to excess while others go hungry and thirsty. He then gives us the profound words of the Last Supper. Some come to Mass wanting to be first, to be able to sit in silence for their own purposes, to offer the Mass the way they want to, sometimes even in Latin. Paul confirms that if we are to be part of it, our whole heart and soul must be with Christ. There can be no factions, no separate groups. We must be one.
