Proclaim the Word of God

I have a lovely silver crucifix that I used to wear daily. However, a couple of years ago I had reason to take it off and have been reluctant to don it again.

This reluctance has nothing to do with feelings of unsafety. Christians in this country are extremely unlikely to be confronted with public abuse, unlike those of Jewish or Muslim faith. Indeed, it’s this asymmetry which is partly responsible for my reluctance. Unfortunately, a certain narrative about proud cross-wearing Christians has arisen and it doesn’t gel with my perception of a loving, inclusive religion.

Yet, perhaps this is an excuse that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. My prayer then today is to be imbued with the Holy Spirit and to proclaim the Word of God boldly.
