About Today Readings

St Henry II

Isaiah 1:10-17. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Ps 49(50):8-9, 16-17, 21, 23. Matthew 10:34 – 11:1.

Show me

‘Words, words, words, I’m so sick of words . . . show me. Tell me no dreams filled with desire, if you’re on fire, show me,’ sings Julie Andrews in ‘Show Me’ from My Fair Lady.

There’s something bracing about today’s first reading. In a world where sycophancy to flawed leaders is a job requirement, God’s insistence on concrete examples of work done in his name is refreshing.

God doesn’t want another sacrifice, a festival or two, a few more words in the form of prayers that are being prayed for others to admire rather than from any earnest desire to change. God can tell the difference between words and deeds. ‘Learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed,

be just to the orphan, plead for the widow.’
