About Today Readings

2 Kings 5:1-15. My soul is thirsting for the living God: when shall I see him face to face? – Psalm 41(42):2-3; 42(43):3-4. Luke 4:24-30.

Open our hearts and ears to receive the prophetic Word of God

We are told that the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard Jesus say that no prophet is accepted in their home town and they drove Jesus out of town and tried to throw him off the cliff. That’s a pretty strong reaction. Was it because Jesus had grown up among them so they were blinded and deafened by familiarity and dismissed what he had to say? Do we also do this to modern-day prophets that we know? How do we react when we hear people exhorting us to do what we can to minimise the impact of climate change, or to welcome refugees, or to donate to charities serving the poor? Is there any prejudice or fear on our part that we need to put before God and instead ask for an open heart and open ears to receive the prophetic Word of God in our world today?
