Importance of real love
What would St Valentine think of his feast day? The frenzy of buying chocolates, roses, and cards for our loved ones, and the utter desperation of some not having a special someone with whom to mark the day. Although other than his martyrdom St Valentine’s story cannot be verified, I like to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Valentine’s Day. A day to remember a Catholic martyr. St Valentine so loved Jesus that he was willing to sacrifice his life in testament to that faith. For me, remembering St Valentine’s legend and death transforms this day from a commercial holiday to its original purpose – marking the life of a saint who gave everything for true love.
Today, Lord, may we remember the importance of real love: to believe without seeing, to love without needing anything in return, and to never give up hope.
