About Today Readings

St Camillus de Lellis

Exodus 1:8-14, 22. Our help is in the name of the Lord – Ps 123(124). Matthew 10:34 – 11:1.

Stay humble and righteous and you will be saved

The Old Testament Reading today is from Exodus, outlining the oppression of the Israelites. This Reading is relevant for the world we live in today. There is distrust and a lessening of respectful disagreement in the world. Troubles are heaped on people, and the support for those in need is less accessible than it was previously. The homeless, for example, have been demonised and new laws and bylaws have been written to make homelessness, or at least sleeping rough, a crime. But there is hope. Just as all good Israelites, we know the rest of the verse. The first verse allows us to bring to mind the fullness of the Reading. The rulers of this world have authority, but God’s prophets are calling for them to repent and, in the end, God will save his people. We will endure. No matter what your persecutions are, stay humble and righteous and you will be saved. That is his covenant.
