The Lord has made known his salvation – Psalm 97(98):1-4

‘This generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah’

What did Jesus have against us wanting a sign? Isn’t that a reasonable request from the Son of God? But what is that we’re really seeking when we ask for a sign? Do we desire and seek God alone, or do we instead want something else? Someone who will wave a magic wand and make our lives better with no work from us? Jesus tells us that we have already been given all that we need. We already had God’s word preached to us, and now we have God incarnate as well. God who dwells with us, and in us. But God will not be conformed to our requests for miracles and wonders, when we have before us the wonder of God who became like us and who offers us eternal life. May we always have eyes to see Jesus himself and to see God among us in each person we encounter.
