There’s always a chance to start afresh with God
The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and indeed, something greater than Jonah is here!
We hear some pretty strong words from Jesus in this story. In it, is an invitation to repentance, to change direction and turn around towards God. We may sometimes relate, though, to the crowds who were asking for a sign and feel challenged by Jesus’ words. When we hear something unexpected or unwelcome, our initial response may be to feel defensive and to justify our position. Yet the invitation from Jesus is to be open to changing direction, to turn around, instead of continuing down the same road away from God because of pride, embarrassment or fear. There is always an opportunity to start afresh with God and to open ourselves to God’s word in our lives today.
