Triumph of the Cross
Numbers 21:4-9. Do not forget the works of the Lord! – Ps 77(78):1-2, 34-38. Philippians 2:6-11. John 3:13-17.
A love that conquers all
Across history, we have raised banners that divide us with slogans shaped by fear, resentment, and the need to defend our own position. They reveal a restless human instinct to secure power and identity over others. Yet in John’s Gospel (3:13-17), God overturns this logic entirely. The Son of Man is lifted up, not in domination but in self-giving love. Where the ancient Babylonian nation understood power and control in the bustling cities, the Israelites encountered Yahweh in the quiet of the wilderness. Centuries later, an itinerant preacher from Galilee is raised unceremoniously on a cross, far from the anticipated throne of power for the long-awaited messianic king.
Our eyes are moved beyond hate and towards a love and humility that is immeasurable and conquers all, even death.
