A confident faith

A centurion, part of the Roman army and an outsider, heard of Jesus and sent some Jewish elders to approach Jesus for healing of his servant. Thus begins this interesting scene, depicted for us by Luke. The local elders beseech Jesus for help, and Jesus goes. But while on his way, the centurion sends word that there’s no need for him to come personally. He explains that he understands Jesus’ authority, and that if he were only to say the word, his servant would be healed. Jesus is amazed by the centurion’s faith, and comments on this to the multitude that has followed him. What would Jesus say about our faith? Do we also believe and trust in Jesus’ authority? And do we believe that outsiders to the church can also possess deep faith? May we follow the example of confident faith set for us by the centurion.
