About Today Readings

Acts 4:23-31. Happy are all who put their trust in the Lord – Psalm 2:1-9. John 3:1-8.

Learning to see the world in an entirely new way

I have sometimes envied Nicodemus. We would all love a chance to sit down and have a good long talk with Jesus. I wonder what we’d ask. I can imagine a list of questions. Yet before Nicodemus can bring up what is on his mind, Jesus tells him that he must be born from above. The Spirit is like the wind. You can’t tell where it is going or where it has come from. You can only hear its sound. We are in the arms of a deep mystery. Often enough, the life of faith means allowing ourselves to surrender to such a deep love, to allow ourselves to be held. Today’s Psalm says ‘Happy are all those who put their trust in the Lord.’

For me, being born from above means being prepared to see the world in an entirely fresh and unconventional way. We know that Nicodemus was a Pharisee. He had studied. Jesus reminds him he still has much to learn.
