About Today Readings

Ezekiel 24:15-24. You have forgotten God, who gave you birth – Deuteronomy 32:18-21. Matthew 19:16-22.

What really matters

Today’s Gospel is a familiar one. We all feel some sympathy for the rich young man told to sell all his possessions. It is a big thing that Jesus is asking of him. We live in a materialistic society where we are so often judged by what we earn and what we own. Advertisements reinforce this by telling us that we need to upgrade to the latest model or that the only worthwhile people are those with money and power. Maybe today’s Gospel is giving us permission to begin to walk away from this consumerism. Maybe today, we can begin by doing one small thing to let it go. Maybe, this can be the start of a slow finding of what really matters in our world.
