About Today Readings

Exodus 1:8-14, 22. Our help is in the name of the Lord – Psalm 123(124). Matthew 10:34 – 11:1.

Happy are those who lift the spirits of others

Our oldest child turns 20 today. I look back with deep gratitude on everything he has brought into our lives, even some of the more challenging days. When Jesus says that anyone who gives one of his friends so much as a cup of water is special, it actually makes me think of my son who is remarkably generous. He has always been the one who will go out of his way to help others, even when that wasn’t recognised. I might compare the way he lives to Pharaoh who, in the first reading, is happy to commit acts of genocide or to take people into slavery and break their spirit. I am glad to have known far more spirit lifters than spirit crushers, and for this I give thanks. The psalm says that our life, like a bird, has escaped from a trap. The help the Lord sends us often comes in the form of those we love.
