About Today Readings

1 Kings 21:1-16. Lord, listen to my groaning – Psalm 5:2-3, 5-7. Matthew 5:38-42.

A call to help people in all their needs

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that ‘if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him’. If we walk the extra mile with someone, we might be able to show them that we are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure the wellbeing of that person. Is the Gospel a reminder to us to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure the wellbeing of another person? Maybe it’s a call for us to help people in all of their needs: spiritual, emotional and physical, and to go beyond our call to help. Jesus through his life showed us a way of self-giving in the service of others, and of offering unconditional love. Who is in need of that unconditional love today?
