About Today Readings

St Ignatius of Antioch

Ephesians 2:1-10. The Lord made us, we belong to him – Psalm 99(100). Luke 12:13-21.

Jesus lifts us up

There is a classic scene in Finding Nemo where a flock of seagulls begin fighting over a tasty morsel and one by one squawk ‘mine, mine, mine!’ I’ve never been able to see a seagull the same again after that scene. Maybe this possessive, self-preserving, fight or flight nature is built deeply into our own DNA. Luke paints an image of Jesus who lifts us up and raises our eyes above the small potato chips that we squabble over on the pavement of our lives. His message isn’t concerned with a diversified portfolio of shares in worldly goods with a spattering of spiritual investments. Jesus invites us to spend now, the Kingdom is here, there is no need to store up faith like superannuation to be accessed at the end of our life.
