Micah 6:1-4, 6-8. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Psalm 49(50):5-6, 8-9, 16-17, 21, 23. Matthew 12:38-42.
Extravagance of God’s love
Hear what the Lord says: do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. God has told us, time and time again, that what is pleasing to God is our acts of justice, our acts of love, and our acts of humility. And yet, time and time again, we think that maybe grand gestures of sacrifice are what is required, or strict adherence to liturgical norms or other traditions, or penance, or refraining from sexual sin only. We minimise God and we minimise the extravagance of God’s love, and we become smaller people for it. We lose sight of God, and we become embroiled in squabbles that do not have God at the heart of them. Let’s recommit our focus, our prayer and our lives. God, help us in our doing of justice, in our loving kindness, in our humble walking with you, so that we may be vessels of your love and your justice in this world.
