About Today Readings

1 Timothy 2:1-8. Blest be the Lord for he has heard my prayer – Psalm 27(28):2, 7-9. Luke 7:1-10.

Everyone is invited

The vision of today’s first reading is generous and full. God ‘wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth’. Not some people, some of the time. Everyone is invited into relationship with God through Christ Jesus. In becoming human, the Son opens out a way to the Father and lasting, saving relationship.

The story of the centurion’s servant bears witness to Jesus’ openness to all. Initially, Jesus seems to understand his mission to be predominantly to Israel. The faith of the gentile centurion, his recognition of the profound authority that Jesus holds, and the way it is held as a reconciling opportunity, moves Jesus. The humility of the centurion who says, ‘I am not worthy to have you under my roof’ is matched by the humility of Jesus who allows himself to be ‘astonished’. Take some time to be with Jesus, one with authority and humility.
