About Today Readings

St Joseph.

2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16. Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22. Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 / Luke 2:41-51.

The son of David will live for ever—Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29.

Joseph was a man who always did what was right.

Today’s meditation should perhaps be left blank! What can we say about a man from whom we have not a single recorded word? His wife seems to have been mostly silent. Apart from her Magnificat, we have only five of Mary’s recorded statements in the New Testament!

In this age of the printed and electronic word, we can sometimes overlook the fact that actions speak louder than words. Joseph was never wanting when it came to making decisions or taking action.

Anyone who can stake his married life on a message received in sleep, or undertake a desert crossing with wife and child at last-minute notice, must be a person of considerable resourcefulness!

Joseph, teach us to listen to God. Show us how to love in an unassuming way. Encourage us to take up your steadfast dedication to serve.
