Acts 14:5-18. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory – Ps 113B(115):1-4, 15-16. John 14:21-26.
Come Holy Spirit
As we near the end of the Easter season, our minds turn to the Holy Spirit, alive and active in the world despite so many attempts by fumbling human beings to disguise that fact. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that he will send the Advocate, meaning the Holy Spirit. We don’t use that word often to describe the Spirit. The voc part means call: a vocation is a calling, and we all have at least one of those, maybe more. So, advocate means originally to call to, and all of us call to the Holy Spirit throughout our lives, hopefully on a daily basis. When I was a teacher, I started every class with the prayer ‘Come Holy Spirit’. I needed all the help I could get. In today’s reading, Paul and Barnabas reassure the crowd ‘we are only human beings like you’. That is true but, like us, they are humans being guided and supported by the Holy Spirit.
