About Today Readings

St Januarius

Proverbs 3:27-34. Whoever does justice shall live on the Lord’s holy mountain – Psalm 14(15):2-5. Luke 8:16-18.

The home we build inside ourselves

I have two young children, and I know that the sort of things we encourage and discourage them to do at home will have an impact on the lives they lead. In a competitive, and often cut-throat world, is it enough to teach them to respect and care for people? Is that enough to make them happy and successful? I’m worried that if my children can’t act strongly in their own self-interest that they’ll find themselves taken advantage of in the wider world.

Today’s readings offer a bit of a response to these questions. Because in God’s world the ability to accumulate worldly goods is nowhere near as important as the home we build inside ourselves for God. ‘To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what they seem to have will be taken away.’
