The feeding of the five thousand
To feed his people in the wilderness is too great a burden for Moses, but it is not for Jesus. Once again, he provides for them. Moses, great as he was, could only ask for the Lord’s help to sustain the people. Jesus however, in a profound statement of his divinity, provides for them himself, exercising directly the power that belongs to God. Seeing the need of the crowds who have sought him, Jesus heals and feeds them. Critically, he does not feed them simply to demonstrate his power, but that they might remain with him. Today, Jesus heals and feeds us not merely with outward cures and bread, but with his very self, taken, blessed, broken and given wherever people gather to seek him. Ultimately his purpose is the same, like at the lakeside, Jesus gives us the Eucharist that we might remain with him.
