Time for resolutions

John the Baptist is a great figure to usher in the new year. He calls us to make resolutions. The resolutions he suggests are more important than ‘lose weight’ and ‘exercise more’, however great those ideas may be. John’s message, in a nutshell, is simply to be open to God. ‘Make a straight way for the Lord’ suggests removing roadblocks and detours; ridding ourselves of anything that makes God’s journey into our lives more difficult. None of us knows what this year will bring. Just think back to the same time last year. Could we have predicted that God would have done so many wonderful things with us and for us? Take a moment to think back over a few of them. Perhaps we can resolve this year to remember that we, like John, are ‘not the one’. The psalm reminds us that the Lord has worked wonders. Let us gently make room in our lives for the one who comes to us every day.
