Let us recognise our need for the bread of life
During the pandemic, we saw some strange patterns in the things we bought. People were stripping shelves bare, panic-buying toilet paper, canned goods, even vegetable seeds from Bunnings. But most interesting perhaps was the yeast. All over the world, supermarkets sold out of yeast as millions decided to try their hand at baking bread at home. Because if the supply chain collapsed, we knew we would be vulnerable, ill-equipped to make our own bread. Even the hint of a possibility that the supply chain could fail and we could run out of bread caused a panic. In this verse in John’s Gospel, Jesus has just fed the five thousand, broken five small barley loaves into great quantities of bread. But here, he says ‘Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.’ May we realise our need for the bread of life as keenly as yeast during a pandemic.
