About Today Readings

Guardian Angels. Zechariah 8:1-8. The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory – Psalm 101(102):16-21, 29, 22-23. Luke 9:46-50.

Gracious acts bring us closer to God

There have been people in my life whom I think of as guardian angels. One time, I was in hospital and scarcely able to move. In the middle of the night, I was helped to the bathroom by a nurse whose name I never asked and whom I never saw again. I can’t forget their kindness and gentleness. There was another time when I lost my credit card at the park and didn’t realise until I had a call from the bank. A stranger had gone all the way to the branch to make sure I got it back. Luckily, life is full of such beauty. When we read today that the angels are always in the presence of God, we realise that such gracious acts do bring us all closer to God, the source of all love. We are called to be childlike in both our acceptance and gratitude. ‘They shall be my people and I will be their God.’
