About Today Readings

St Bernard.

Ezekiel 24:15-24. Deuteronomy 32:18-21. Matthew 19:16-22.

You have forgotten God who gave you birth. Deuteronomy 32:18-21.

‘You will learn that I am the Lord.’

We don’t know what happened to the young man, but we do know that he walked away burdened by what he was asked to do. He was wealthy and he was asked to sell what he owned and give the proceeds to the poor.

We all carry around with us lots of things. They might be physical things like possessions, or they might be emotive things like unrealistic expectations, attitudes, prejudices, sorrows, hurts. And these become the ‘treasured’ baggage of our lives.

Today, Jesus provides us with an invitation: ‘if you want to be free to be a follower of mine, then give all these things away!’ Is this happy or sad news for us?
