Ecclesiasticus 1:1-10. The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty – Psalm 92(93):1-2, 5. Mark 9:14-29.
Before all other things, wisdom was created
Our progress in understanding the world, its origins, processes and the myriad things which populate it is breathtaking. Every day a new discovery, a new insight, a refined theory or better explanation. We have also learned to harness this knowledge. Whether it is exotic materials, atomic structures, chemical components or radio waves, we are routinely increasing our ability to manipulate the world around us.
Much of this is utterly wonderful, although some of the ills of human mastery are inescapable as our world warms and the threat of technologically facilitated extinction always looms. A subtler danger in this is that we might forget that we are creatures, among and not above the created world, beginning to think of ourselves only as creators. In this we may eventually lose sight of the creator. Wisdom, beyond knowledge and mastery, is more elusive and must be sought from the only wise One.
