St Joseph
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16. The son of David will live for ever – Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22. Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24.
Joseph is a model of faithful hope
The Feast of Saint Joseph is one of March’s festive waterholes amid the aridity of Lent. In her wisdom, the Church has retained it as one of a few feasts that regularly disrupt the season’s uniformity. This is especially suitable because St Joseph, like Abraham before him, is a model of faithful hope. It has always been held that St Joseph did not live to see his Son’s ministry. Rather he humbly followed the commands of God, cared for his family amid the world’s darkness, and departed quietly while the sun was only beginning to rise. We can look to St Joseph as a hero and friend as we trudge along. With his intercession, may we walk so as to join him ‘in the calm light of everlasting life’.
