About Today Readings

St Pius X

Judges 2:11-19. Lord, remember us, for the love you bear your people – Psalm 105(106):34-37, 39-40, 43-44. Matthew 19:16-22.

Jesus is our constant help

You might identify with the author of Judges who outlines the history of his people as a series of ups and downs with God: sometimes God seems merciful and caring, at other times – because of the nation’s faults – God seems stern and punishing. That might seem to be the pattern of your (family) life. The death and Resurrection of Jesus, however, is a message from God that this is not the right way to understand the fortunes and misfortunes of our lives. As St Paul said, ‘if God is for us, who can be against?’ If life deals us heavy blows, God is the one who offers us strength and hope and companionship in the person of Jesus. Jesus is the ‘judge’ (the leader) who never dies. Jesus is our constant help in all times of need.
