Ephesians 2:1-10. The Lord made us, we belong to him – Psalm 99(100). Luke 12:13-21.
We are saved by grace
Many of us who try to follow after Jesus face a temptation to soften aspects of the Gospel. We all like the Good News but sometimes downplay the bad news. Faced with the clear scriptural witness that something is seriously wrong with humans and we really need God’s help, we squirm. It is often easier, in the face of much evidence, to pretend that people are mostly just a little bad. With this view, all most of us have to do is try a little and we’ll end up on the side of the angels. Outside of being wrong, this carries a surprising danger of a lapse towards moralism and self-righteousness. This view also fails terribly when we do have to confront our own sins, which no amount of brownie points can sort out. Better to know our sins are scarlet, and we are saved by grace.
