About Today Readings

St Matthew

Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13. Their message goes out through all the earth – Ps 18(19):2-5. Matthew 9:9-13.

God’s graces need to be shared

Today’s first reading reminds us that the Holy Spirit is shared among us. The Spirit is at the depths of each one of us but is never ours to be possessively grasped. Rather, the Spirit of God comes alive in us when we share him. So, we are called to live ‘charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience’. We bear gifts from God, graces not to be hoarded but to be re-gifted.

Jesus, sitting with tax collectors and sinners for dinner, offers us an image of this sharing. He bears the gift of mercy. He knows that those who are recognised as sinners, those who recognise their need for mercy in encountering him, are most in need of the gift he has to share.

As with Jesus, our gifts may take us to uncomfortable spaces, to be with challenging people. What am I invited to share this day?
