The invitation of God

‘The shepherd’s sheep know his voice and follow him . . .’ How do you hear God’s voice or sense God’s message for you? In our heads and bodies are many voices and sensations, all clamouring for attention and action. And when we think we hear God, we are assailed by a doubt: ‘Am I making this up for myself?’ As we grow in Christian discipleship, becoming familiar with the Scriptures along the way and perhaps guided by a wise mentor, we can learn how to recognise God’s messages from other calls. Not in every case, but certainly in general, God speaks with gentleness, not harshness; God speaks with encouragement, not judgment; God invites rather than compels; God speaks words of love to us. Attending to and trusting this voice or sensation will give us firm ground in times of turmoil and a light in times of darkness.
