About Today Readings

Our Lady, Mother and Queen

2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12. Proclaim his marvellous deeds to all the nations – Psalm 95(96):1-5. Matthew 23:13-22.

The door of the kingdom of heaven is opened to us

‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces’. These opening words of today’s Gospel seem quite inappropriate for this feast of Mary, Mother and Queen. Today’s feast comes exactly a week after the feast of the Assumption. Following a rhythm of liturgy we acclaim her today, Queen of Heaven, and complete the glorious mysteries of the Rosary. But more than being Queen, Pope Francis tells us in Evangelii Gaudium that ‘Jesus left us his mother to be our mother. Only after doing so did Jesus know that “all was now finished”.’ (EG 285). Pope Francis calls her the Mother of Evangelisation. Mother and Queen, Mary is a powerful force with the Holy Spirit, and opens the door of the kingdom of heaven to us, and not shut it in people’s faces as did the Pharisees.
