Chair of St Peter, Apostle.
1 Peter 5:1-4. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want – Psalm 22(23). Matthew 16:13-19.
‘Watch over the flock, not simply as a duty but gladly’
Today is the Feast of St Peter’s Chair. In the first reading (1 Peter 5:1-4) and in the well-known Psalm 22(23), the imagery is of shepherds caring for their flocks. The shepherds are guides. Once they’ve been brought safely to the meadows the flock is left to wander and the good shepherd only interferes in their meanderings when danger threatens.
Peter’s call to be shepherds of the flock is not just for those involved in pastoral or clerical hierarchies. It is good advice for any leader to be aware of any tendencies to be dictatorial. Rather than demanding people follow their rules and whims, good leaders (in any setting) ‘show’, rather than tell.Email this Print This Page
