About Today Readings

Ss John Fisher & Thomas More

2 Kings 17:5-8, 13-15, 18. Help us with your right hand, O Lord, and answer us – Ps 59(60):3-5, 12-13. Matthew 7:1-5.

Do not judge, and you will not be judged

Volunteers for social justice organisations are always reminded that it is not their place to judge but to help to the extent they can. A friend once delivered meals to the elderly and housebound. She mentally judged one woman as being well enough to not need the help, until the time she found her unable to function because of Parkinson’s disease.

It is true that judgement is needed to ensure resources are used wisely, but it is almost impossible to know what a person is going through when viewed from the outside. Wondering why you’re delivering food parcels to an obviously comfortable middle-class home? Perhaps there is unexpected unemployment or sickness or both.

Let us pray today for a generous spirit.
