About Today Readings

St Rita of Cascia

Acts 19:1-8. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth – Psalm 67(68):2-7. John 16:29-33.

In God’s kingdom we will know love and peace

In today’s Gospel, Jesus expresses his hope that his disciples will ‘have peace in me’. He knows that they will not have him with them for much longer and that their paths through the world will be difficult. His promise is that, despite whatever worldly difficulties they might face, the disciples will know peace with the Father.

Peace seems difficult to find, at times. There are always new deadlines to meet, errands to run, tasks to be accomplished, and there never seems enough time in the day. And yet, Jesus urges us to take courage. For whatever awaits us in this world, there’s a God beyond who also awaits us, in a kingdom where we will know love and peace like we cannot now imagine.

In the midst of our daily grind, carrying the hope of that place in our hearts can be enough, it seems to me, to bring us a sense of peace and consolation.
