Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62. Though I walk in the valley of darkness I fear no evil, for you are with me – Ps 22(23). John 8:1-11.
May we always work for justice
The story of Susanna that we hear part of for our first reading is beautiful and challenging. It is largely a story about sexual abuse and power. Susanna was accosted by two powerful men, who attempt to use their status to abuse her. When she resisted, they accused her of promiscuity. The echoes of stories still used to denigrate women are striking. At the start of our reading, the men appear to be getting their way. They’ve successfully convinced the people of Susanna’s guilt. The mob don’t even bother to go through the motions of investigation. Surely these upstanding men would never lie? Then God intervenes, using someone of low status as he often does, to reveal the truth. In our Church, the words of the elders to Daniel, implying that no one will believe him because of his age, ring painfully loud. May God always work justice through us.
