The Spirit of truth will be my witness
During the season of Pentecost, we are reminded of how we respond as witnesses to the story of Jesus and his everlasting mission. Lydia, a wealthy Gentile woman responds to Paul’s message when the Lord opens her heart to it. What a beautiful phrase! When did we last open our hearts to the Lord’s message, allowing it to reorient our lives in a fruitful way? For Lydia, this develops into a hospitality of the heart and an acknowledgment of the beauty of that common understanding and sense of belonging felt by those early believers.
As a faithful people we are reminded to have joy in the Lord and to celebrate this. Believers are people of dance and music and song; our witness is joyful. In John’s Gospel, the Holy Spirit is invoked to empower this witness so that this does not fall away, especially when under the coercive pressures of Roman occupation as was the experience of the first Christians. Let us look to the Holy Spirit as our advocate and guide as we deal with the pressures of the 21st century and the competing demands of a secular pluralist society. Let the Spirit be the wind beneath our wings
