St Clement I; St Columban
Apocalypse 14:1-5. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face – Psalm 23(24):1-6. Luke 21:1-4.
The widow’s mite
I watched old moneybags stride in and pull
a wad of notes from his big leather purse
and fling them in the bowl. Soon after that
a bent, bedraggled woman hobbled up
and tumbled in a pair of one cent coins,
and crept away in shame. Then Jesus praised
the gift of this unnoticed worshipper
who gave in trust her lunch, her pride, her self.
Do you donate from superfluity
and measure gifts by what they cost in cash
and dignity? Or does your gift lay bare
the wounded rawness of your naked self?
