About Today Readings

St Fidelis of Sigmaringen

Acts 6:8-15. Blessed are they who walk in the way of the Lord – Psalm 118(119):23-24, 26-27, 29-30. John 6:22-29.

We pray for God’s grace and power

The beginning of this verse describes Stephen as ‘full of grace and power’. A dynamic and beautiful description, of which few are described. Grace can be thought of as soft, when in fact it gives strength. Power can be thought of as dominating, when in fact it can be the instrument of peace. Stephen had both as an apostle, but the world he was a part of could not withstand the truth of Jesus that he shared, or the ‘wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke’. How does this ring true for you in the world we are now part of? How often are people now publicly vilified for sharing their Christian views, their truth? We may not be publicly stoned now as poor Stephen was, but with God’s grace and power, we need the courage of Stephen, to love with the ‘face of an angel’, while we remain constant in the truth. Stephen, apostle of the Lord, please pray for us.
