About Today Readings

Christmas Eve.
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16. Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Luke 1:67‑79.

For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29.
‘By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us.’

Christmas is a time for homecomings for many. Family members gather to share in the Christmas food and cheer. The loss or absence of a geographical home is a great gap in the life of a human person.

The readings for this Christmas Eve may provide a word of comfort: that the God who created them also did not have a geographical abode. This person who lacked stability, solidarity and identity, actually became the source of all three to the people of Israel, and then to the church. The readings remind us that God is the source of all gifts. In God we find stability, solidarity, and identity.
