St Sarbel Makhlüf
Exodus 14:5-18. Let us sing to the Lord; he has covered himself in glory – Exodus 15:1-6. Matthew 12:38-42.
Jonah was in the whale’s belly for three days and three nights
How easy it would be to believe if we had a sign from the heavens that we are on the right path, or making right decisions, or confirming the very existence of God. Yet Jesus is quite dismissive of the value of signs – so dismissive in fact that he says that only ‘evil and wicked generations’ ask for a sign. But surely it is common sense to conclude that certainty is much better than faith? Jesus doesn’t think so.
At the heart of the matter is love. Love must be a free choice or else it is simply not love. Knowing with our hearts and responding to a mysterious sense that we are loved is the only sign that is really needed. God is ultimately mystery, and we are drawn deeper into this mystery through love.
