Birthday of John the Baptist
Isaiah 49:1-6. I praise you, for I am wonderfully made – Psalm 138(139):1-3, 13-15. Acts 13:22-26. Luke 1:57-66, 80.
What will this child turn out to be?
‘What will this child turn out to be?’
we asked, when lost in wonder
we saw the new born baby’s face
on which God’s calling was not yet etched,
And yet we’ve seen the mystery
in that unmarked and puckled face.
It has unrolled in long-hair, fasts,
a desert home, and call to preach.
Lord, help us read the script you write
for each of us, and find there words
of love and calling, as did John
In Jordan’s stream and Herod’s cell.
