Our Lady Help of Christians
Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31. You are the highest honour of our race – Judith 13:18-20. James 3:13-18. Luke 1:39-56.
For centuries, the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians offered an opportunity to pray for the protection, and even expansion, of Christendom, in opposition to those forces beyond its European borders. While most of us today are not interested in faith as a geo-political power, this feast is still an opportunity to pray and reflect on how we might bring concerns that are central to our faith back into the public spotlight.
In the Gospel, Mary speaks of some of those concerns. We might add to them other concerns that are particularly neglected in our conversation today, such as the plight of refugees and others who are excluded.
We pray that Mary might intercede for us today. Help us oppose those forces – both within us and outside of us – that would lead us to forget the inherent dignity of each person in our world.
